CBD Products: which one is right and what strength is best for me?

So you have done all your research about CBD and its health benefits and now you are ready to buy some. You have been scanning the product pages in an online store and now you are asking yourself, which one should I choose and what strength is best for me? These are very important questions to answer because ultimately what you want to buy is a product that gives you the best value for money, without any compromise in quality and strength and you also want the most efficient way of taking it so that you can get the most benefit from it. In this article we want to give you the heads up about the various products on the market and which one may work best for you.

Let’s start by clearing the air on the question that everybody asks about CBD. Does it get you high? The answer is NO. The reason CBD will not get you high, even though it is taken from the cannabis plant is because CBD is one of at least 60 different compounds within the cannabis plant, and it is one that does not have any psychoactive properties. It won’t get you high.

Although CBD is found in all cannabis plants. The CBD products that fill our store shelves is most commonly taken from the hemp plant. Hemp, is a species of cannabis plant that is grown specifically for commercial reasons -CBD being one of those reasons. Since it is grown for commercial purposes, hemp has a relatively high amount of CBD content within it and a relatively low amount of the compound THC, which is famous for providing the high feeling when someone consumes any part of the marijuana plant.

Now that we have that question out of the way. Let us talk about the various types of CBD in the market. The most commonly produced CBD products are either considered full spectrum, broad spectrum or isolate. The CBD products that you have been looking at online or in the store - whether it is in the form of a paste or tincture (liquid drops), gummies, capsules, topical creams, vapes or cigarette - is classified in one of these 3 types.

Whilst you are not limited to any one form of CBD, as ultimately you are using it to treat a symptom that you are experiencing, some types and ways of ingesting CBD will deliver a stronger, faster and/or longer effect than other types.

The most popular type of CBD is full-spectrum. It is the most preferred type of CBD because even though it has one main ingredient, being CBD, it comes packed with the benefit of several other minor ingredients from the hemp plant. When making full spectrum CBD several other compounds are included to work alongside of the CBD compound, resulting in a synergistic effect known as the 'entourage effect’. When the compounds are kept together it promotes a greater sense of well-being. If you have no problems taking a little THC in your CBD oil, then we recommend that you choose full spectrum as your first preference because it delivers the greatest benefit.

Coming in at second place as the most preferred type of CBD is broad-spectrum. It is very similar to full spectrum in that it contains the similar compounds, but it excludes THC. It is also said to provide the entourage effect, because it has multiple compounds working synergistically, however it does so without the benefit of a little THC.

Finally, coming in at third place is CBD isolate. As its name suggests it contains only one compound - CBD. Why would you choose an isolate when you have the benefit of full spectrum? The main reason for an isolate is to have a CBD product without any other compounds - especially THC. If you were employed in an environment where drug screening was a part of your work place agreement then you would not choose a full spectrum product because through constant use, a build up of THC will eventually show up on a drug test. In that case you would either choose a broad spectrum or an isolate product. Furthermore if any of the other compounds affect someone in an undesirable way then an isolate option would be the preferred option over the other two types.

What types of CBD products are on the market?

Oils and tinctures: People can take these products on their own sublingually (under the tongue), usually through a dropper or add them to food and drinks for consumption. Taking CBD under your tongue on its own is a more efficient means of absorbing CBD into the body than mixing it with food and drink, as some of the CBD will be lost in the digestion process.

Edibles: When CBD is produced in a food form it is an edible. CBD edibles are available as drinks and food items. Edibles tend to take longer before the effects are felt.

Vaporisers: People take CBD via a vaporiser because its effects are delivered quickly. However, vaping comes with the same risks as smoking. It may be damaging to your lungs. CBD consumed sublingually may offer a similar delivery speed as a vaporiser without the risk of smoke damage.

Creams and lotions: CBD in the form of topical oils, creams, and lotions may have a mixed effect on people. Some people feel the effects immediately and others do not notice any effects for several hours.

Some companies may add other ingredients to their products to work alongside the CBD. It is not uncommon for flavouring additives, or other chemicals to be added to provide an extra benefit. However these ingredients may cause an allergic reaction in some people so it is important to read the ingredients list before buying any CBD product.

 

How much should I take to reduce my symptoms?

Cannabidiol, or CBD (for short) will affect you in many different ways. In most cases people who buy CBD do so for the following reasons:
it reduces pain
to reduce anxiety
to reduce depression
to improve sleep
to reduce seizures for people with epilepsy
to reduce inflammation
to improve heart health
to reduce the symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

No matter what symptom you are trying to treat with CBD, giving yourself an adequate dose is of extreme importance or it may not work for you. Since CBD does not have any officially recommended dosages it can be difficult to determine how much CBD you should take. Recent studies have shown that there is not one universal dosage of CBD that everyone should take because people respond differently to different dosages of CBD. An effective dosage can range anywhere between 20mg and 1500mg per day.

We recommend buying a CBD product with the highest dosage that fits your budget. If you need a stronger dose, a strong product can deliver more bang for your buck. You can get a higher dose from a smaller serving giving you more to use over a longer period of time.

Most CBD companies will provide a guide or a recommended dose for using their product. However this is only a general serving suggestion. You will most likely need to experiment a little bit with your CBD intake to determine the optimum amount of CBD necessary to reduce your unwanted symptoms. As we said earlier, if you don’t allow yourself a strong enough dose you may not see any effect. If you think that you have taken too much CBD, do not worry. Scientists, medical professionals and the World Health Organisation, have agreed that CBD is safe. Even if you were to ingest an extremely large dose of it, the worst you would experience is drowsiness, lethargy, an upset stomach, nausea or diarrhoea. It would not create any long term side effects and is highly unlikely to cause death.

Whilst much of the world still has the hemp plant and CBD outlawed along with marijuana and THC consumption, the world is beginning to realise its medicinal value in treating various health conditions.
